An Unwind Love: Ewe Ewe’s Wooly Worsted

Unwind’s Stephanie Steinhaus: I’ve fallen so hard for Ewe Ewe’s Wooly Worsted yarn that I’ve had to learn everything about it and Heather Walpole who founded the company.

US: When you decided to start a yarn company with one signature yarn, why did you create Wooly Worsted? What are some of the features of the yarn?
Heather Walpole: When dreaming of yarns (we all do it!), soft, smooth merino has always been my favorite go-to knitting yarn and worsted weight works up quickly for me. I love yarns that bounce and I created Wooly Worsted
to have a springiness that is unmatched on the market today. The 3-ply twist of Wooly Worsted means cables look beautiful and the merino means it’s so soft anyone can wear it. Plus, Wooly Worsted Washable is just that, washable! A special coating on the wool means Wooly Worsted won’t shrink and it can be washed and dried and it won’t felt.

US: Your designs play with color. Was color always your primary inspiration? What or who has inspired you?
HW: Color is my first love! I studied design in school and didn’t learn to knit until after I graduated. When I fell in love with knitting combining colors and designing patterns was an easy step for me. Then with the lucky opportunity to launch my own yarn line, I designed a palette of my favorite colors, heavily saturated of course!!

US: The Wooly Worsted color story is very tight. Did you have to leave out a favorite color to tell the story? From all the rainbow of colors what lead you to choose your seven?
HW: Bright colors are my favorites and I had to start a palette with the colors that truly inspired me. I’ve been knitting with the same 7 colors for a year and knowing myself, I knew I’d have to love the colors to create new knitting pattern designs and really build Ewe Ewe as a brand.

US: What types of projects do you like to knit? Has that changed since you started Wooly Worsted?
HW: I love fun projects that are quick to knit. I also love Fair Isle and adding color in unique ways. I designed Wooly Worsted in 50g balls so knitters can choose a variety of colors for one project. I’ve always knitted projects that I would wear and I’d wear any of the colors or patterns with Wooly Worsted in them!

US: Are you excited to have Ewe Ewe at Unwind and to launch Club Ewe Ewe there?
HW: I’m so happy to be launching Club Ewe Ewe with Unwind! Unwind always has great yarns and fun events and partnering on this with [you] is like a knitting dream come true! I can’t wait to see how knitters work with Wooly Worsted during Club Ewe Ewe.
